Advanced Practice Registered Nurses / Physician Assistants

Responsibilities include diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the nurse practitioner to extend their knowledge in the sphere of decision making required to establish a diagnosis and to plan the appropriate therapy. Works collaboratively with the neurologists to provide care to new or established patients. Major roles include provision of acute episodic care for all practice patients, continuity care and advocacy for patients, serving as a liaison between physicians and patients. These roles, undertaken in cooperation with nursing, staff physicians and other department staff, may include triage, telephone communication and patient education.
Reports clinically to the designated primary collaborating physician(s). Reports administratively to the Director and Operations Manager, Neurosciences.
Assists the physician in the care and evaluation of patients:
Performs and records historical, physical examination and neurological examination data.
Clearly discriminates between normal and abnormal findings when evaluating the historical, physical examination and laboratory data.
Identifies patient problems and develops further evaluation plans and treatment modalities in concert with the appropriate collaborating physician.
As requested by the physician, requests services of support systems, either outpatient or inpatient, provided by the Geisinger System.
Informs the collaborating physician of all changes in the patient's condition.
Reviews all appropriate laboratory studies and X-rays.
In concert with collaborating physician, writes orders for appropriate laboratory, X-ray studies and consultations.
Provides ongoing health education regarding problems as directed by physician for patient and family members.
Assists patients, nursing staff and physicians through telephone triage, refill of medications and provision of medical advice - in collaboration with the physician(s).
In accordance with the state practice act, ensures each patient is seen by a physician at least every third visit or annually.
As appropriate to the nurse practitioner's educational preparation, performs therapeutic and diagnostic procedures as directed by the collaborating physician including, but not limited to, the following:
Bladder catheterization, including Foley
Assists with advanced life support
Obtains informed consent for procedures, which the nurse practitioner is credentialed to perform, according to established guidelines.
Performs other procedures as indicated by departmental protocol and clinical privilege checklist as directed by the collaborating physician.
Communicates to patients and family members, in a language they can understand, summaries of all pertinent medical findings and advice as directed by the collaborating physician.
Appropriately attends all departmental conferences when held or when asked to attend by collaborating physician.
Continues to meet ongoing continuing medical education requirements as specified by AANP and provides copy of documentation for internal and external continuing medical education attended to the office of credentialing.
Requirements and Education:
Degree of professional training to qualify as a physician assistant/nurse practitioner both professionally and legally to perform all services indicated by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and licensure as described in the policy and procedure manual for utilization of physician assistant/nurse practitioner within the Geisinger System required.
Completion of an approved graduate program required.
Completion of an approved ACLS program preferred.
The successful Physician Assistant candidate will work under the responsibility and supervision of the physician and require completion of an ARC-PA (or predecessor organization) approved physician assistant program, current NCCPA certification or eligibility and Pennsylvania State licensure.
The successful Nurse Practitioner candidate will work in collaboration with the physician and have a certificate of completion from an approved program for Nurse Practitioners or be eligible to hold national certification that allows the NP to work with the patient populations and location settings associated with this position. Must be eligible for licensure as a nurse practitioner in the state of PA.
