One reason for the area's popularity is the fact that it gets considerably less rain than the west side of the state. Hood River is named for its proximity to the Columbia River and Mount Hood, both of which offer outstanding recreational opportunities such as hiking, biking, fishing and windsurfing. Hood River is also a major fruit producing area, with apple, pear and nut orchards in the hills and valleys above the river.
