Mental Health America of Kentucky (MHA-KY) is a statewide organization dedicated to promoting mental health, working for the prevention of mental illnesses, and improving care and treatment for persons suffering from mental and emotional disorders. MHA-KY is seeking an individual to serve as Executive Director (ED). The ED is responsible for the daily operations and overall performance of MHA-KY. This individual will work closely with the Board to set strategy and shape policy on program administration and financial matters. S/he is responsible for the development and nurturing of a diverse range of partnerships and relationships that will enable MHA-KY to expand its programs and realize its goals. The Executive Director plans and executes all aspects of the agency’s programs, and is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the organization. The ED maximizes all external relationships with government, mental health organizations, professional groups and the community-at-large, and serves as the visible spokesperson for the agency. The ED’s activities should follow the agency’s stated purpose and the strategic plan, and should be executed in a manner that reflects stewardship of the agency’s resources, and that achieves performance goals. The ED is responsible for working effectively with the Board.
Expands voice and influence of MHA-KY through targeted outreach, existing and new partnerships and public presence; serve as spokesperson for the organization
Fills the roll of administrator, development officer, marketing director, educator, bookkeeper, and volunteer coordinator
Develops and implements a yearly Operational Plan with input from the Board of Directors that addresses (at minimum) yearly budget, staffing, fundraising/development and partnerships
Provides guidance to the Board of Directors to help them fulfill their responsibilities as Board members in formulating policy, financial oversight, fundraising, and assessing the performance of the agency
Executes the directives of the Board of Directors including staffing board meetings; distributing agendas, meeting minutes, financials and other documents prior to meetings. Provides updates on the agency’s performance and any key issues to the Board and provides staff support to board committees
Represents MHA-KY to other organizations, negotiates and maintains partnerships
Prepares agency budgets that encompass planned revenue and expenditures, manages the resources of the agency and is held accountable for control of these resources
Is responsible and accountable for all successful fundraising and development activities of the organization
Works with the Board of Directors to identify and cultivate corporate and individual donors; and oversees all fundraising events
Manage the agency budget and leverage assets of MHA-KY to most effectively carry out the agency's mission
Provide leadership in advocating on issues of central importance to MHA-KY
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization including management of volunteers
Play an active role in the community of related local, state, and national organizations representing the strategic interests of MHA-KY
Advocate MHA-KY’s interests before governmental and non-governmental bodies on matters of mental health policy
Participate in cooperative relationship with Mental Health America – National Office and attend yearly national meetings
Oversee administrative and program operations and ensure that high professional standards are maintained
Provide vision and guidance for MHA-KY programs including, but not limited to B4Stage4 program, Mental Health Month activities, Quilts for Comfort, and community educational programs
Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of mental health
Desired Professional Experience and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred in Nonprofit Management, Social Work, Public Health, Business or related field. The candidate must have at least three years experience in a senior leadership position
Candidate must have a track record of success in generating revenue, including fund development, success in attracting grants and the ability to identify and steward individual donors.
Demonstrated achievement of organizational growth strategies; Experience and knowledge of current trends in the field of mental health; Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, networking, and advocacy skills; Experience working with a board of directors
A “bridge builder” skilled at building consensus and achieving buy-in across constituents
Strong executive presence and an articulate communicator who can deliver messages with confidence and authority
Experience supervising volunteers
Adaptable to changing conditions, ability to multi-task and work efficiently under deadline
Excellent communication skills, in written, oral and online communication systems as well as public speaking, presentation skills and grant writing
Experience in budgeting and financial management, ability to grow a non-profit organization
Politically savvy and knowledgeable about the public policy process
High personal and professional ethical standards
Ability to raise the visibility of MHA-KY
Possesses a passion and commitment to make a difference in a nonprofit setting

The Executive Director position is a 30-hour a week, part-time position under the direction of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board President. Office located in Lexington, Kentucky but will consider applicants from other locations within Kentucky.
