APP will provide specialty level palliative care to patients with serious illness in an interdisciplinary team setting. APPwill be responsible for managing adults in a consultative role with an established diagnosis of a serious illness, managing complex symptoms specific to serious illness, conducting goals of care conversations and family meetings and discussing advance care planning.

An integral component of the University of Colorado is the Palliative Care program which began caring for patients at University of Colorado Hospital in 2000, making the program the longest standing palliative care program in Colorado. The program formalized in 2005 and expanded from a physician-based service into an interdisciplinary team providing specialty-level care to patients and their loved ones hospitalized at the University of Colorado Hospital. The palliative care program was awarded Joint Commission Advanced Certification Program in Palliative Care in November 2013, signifying national recognition and standards for quality patient care. The University hosts the Colorado Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program which was developed in 2006 and is currently the only palliative medicine fellowship program in Colorado accredited through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. In the summer of 2015, the palliative care program expanded to serve patients in the outpatient setting at the Palliative Care Clinic, and launched the Interprofessional Masters of Palliative Care Program in the fall of 2016.
