The city of Cle Elum, population 2,000, is a lovely village set in the Cascade Mountains about 80 miles southeast of Seattle. Relative to its larger urban neighbors to the west, Cle Elum is drenched in sun, averaging 299 sunny days, compared to 58 in Seattle. Its name comes from a Native American word meaning swift water, and the river that inspired the name is also called Cle Elum, and it flows into 4,500-acre Cle Elum Lake.
