Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care and serves as a tertiary care referral center for VISN 12. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital also serves as the VISN 12 southern tier hub for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, and fiscal services.
Hines VAH currently operates 471 beds and six community based outpatient clinics in Manteno, Elgin, Oak Lawn, Aurora, LaSalle, and Joliet. Over 700,000 patient visits occurred in fiscal year 2014 providing care to over 56,000 veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties. In FY 2015 the budget for Hines was over $500 million.
Hines VAH is affiliated with 70 colleges and universities and 40 associated health professions. The main medical school affiliation is the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University of Chicago. There are over 1,300 students educated annually at Hines.

The Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development (ACOS for R&D) is a senior clinical leader at Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital which directly reports to the Chief of Staff. The ACOS for R&D is the Chief of the Research and Development Service actively engaged in over $22 million of funded research. He/she is responsible for the disposition of resources, developing administrative procedures and policies, program expansion, and ensuring that all research complies with VA and other Federal regulations, policies and directives. The ACOS for R&D acts as the official liaison on matters pertaining to research to all internal and external stakeholders to include the Department of Veterans Affairs, all regulatory bodies and agencies and our major Affiliate, Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine. In addition to being the subject matter expert on issues of research for the Director and Chief of Staff he/she also advises research staff on administrative, scientific and professional matters and is responsible for submission of all reports, correspondence, and maintenance of documents necessary for the successful administration of the research program. In addition, the ACOS for R&D as a senior leader will be a member of various committees to include the Medical Executive Committee and a statutory member of the Chicago Association for Research and Education in Science (CARES) Board of Directors. There may be other assignments as determined by the Chief of Staff.
The ideal candidate must have a successful research background with knowledge and personal experience in research, including processes for private and government research funding. They must have broad understanding of academic partnerships and be able to forge strong working relationships with multiple institutions. The individual must be familiar with research regulatory issues and understand necessary compliance standards. They will need to provide oversight of regulatory compliance for Research service. The ideal candidate should be able to lead and develop research programs, organizing and implementing a strategic plan for building a dynamic research portfolio for Hines.
