Yale University seeks an Assistant Chief of Athletic Medicine, Team Physician, serving Yale students within Yale Health, the University's comprehensive, physician-led health maintenance organization. The University's Student Health Services provide primary care to Yale University's large and diverse undergraduate and graduate student population, with approximately 12,000 students ranging in age from 18-60.
The Athletic Medicine Department at Yale Health provides primary care sports medicine service to Yale varsity athletes - Yale has 35 teams competing in NCAA Division I sports - and is led by a full-time Chief. Athletic Medicine provides approximately 3,000 clinical encounters annually with varsity athletes both at the Yale Health Center and at athletic sites. The Athletic Medicine Department works in close partnership with Student Wellness, Mental Health & Counseling, Nutrition Counseling, SHARE (Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Education Center) and other Yale Health Departments including Gynecology, Health Education, Acute and Inpatient Care, Laboratory Services, etc..
The Assistant Chief will report to the Chief of Athletic Medicine at Yale Health and serve as primary care clinician to Yale varsity student athletes. The Assistant Chief will provide continuing, comprehensive health care for all varsity student athletes and serve as primary care sports medicine consultant for Student Health services for non-varsity athletes. This is a non-faculty, clinical position.
Essential Duties: Provides comprehensive ongoing patient centered medical care for all varsity student athletes.
Diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses that occur as a result of or that impact participation in varsity athletic activities.
Evaluate and implement programs for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of illness and injury to the student athlete.
Maintain standards, in consultation and collaboration with Primary Care Sports Medicine colleagues and specialty consultants, for medical care within the specialty and assist in the development of productivity and quality assurance measures.
Work closely with the Deans and Heads of College as well as with other stakeholders including, but not limited to, Orthopedics and Athletics. Interpersonal skills, collegiality and ability to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team are critical characteristics for success in this position.
Work closely with certified athletic trainers. Support and supervise the clinical care provided by certified athletic trainers while appreciating that these certified athletic trainers are employed by the Department of Athletics.
Document encounters in the EMR including diagnosis and proposed plan of care. Update patient’s active problems, medication list and health maintenance at each encounter. Monitor patient’s adherence with the treatment plan and varies plan according to patient’s responses. Meet departmental standards for quality of clinical care, productivity and service. Follow practice guidelines established by the department and Yale Health.
Graduation from an accredited medical school. Graduation from an accredited residency in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics or Emergency Medicine.
Holds or is eligible to hold a CT Medical License.
Holds or is eligible to hold a CT Controlled Substance Registration and Federal DEA Registration.
Qualifies for hospital and faculty appointments.
Fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine. Previous experience working with adolescents and young adults, preferably in a high school or college setting
Preferred: Minimum of 2 years previous experience working with Division 1 College athletic program.
