You may choose which specialties you would like to apply for within the application process. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations:GS-11 Social Worker In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates: (1) Experience and Licensure. Appointment to the GS-11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work-related settings, (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. (2) Education. In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. (3) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. (b) Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. (c) Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. (d) Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. (e) Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the work are generally minor and are generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional travel. Physical activity involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing stairs, and carrying light items such as papers, books or other supplies. The incumbent uses a computer and standard office equipment to complete tasks. The emotional demands can be stressful in working with the Veteran/Patient population and their families/caregivers. A level of self-awareness is essential. ["Suicide Prevention Case Manager: The incumbent is assigned to the Suicide Prevention program at the Memphis VA Medical Center and provides case management and clinical intervention of Veterans who are identified as high risk for suicide. The incumbent must use a high level of skill in assessing and treating the complicated psychosocial problems of at-risk Veterans as they transition from inpatient to outpatient care of have been identified as moderate or high risk. The incumbent will play a role in Suicide Prevention Programs by fielding various calls, assessing Veterans for clinical needs, assisting in crisis situations, and conducting various case management functions. HUD-VASH Case Manager: The incumbent is assigned to HUD-VASH as a Case Manager within the Mental Health Service working with Veterans who have substance abuse and mental Illness. The incumbent is a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides intense case management for Veterans who present as homeless and in need of a stable housing environment. Case managers are involved in community work/outreach as well as provide intake evaluations for diagnosis, treatment planning, counseling and group therapy Inpatient Social Worker: The incumbent has a broad range of responsibilities while working with veterans who are on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit. The incumbent completes psychosocial assessments, risk assessments, safety plans, and weekly progress notes. The incumbent provides case management. The incumbent is part of a multi-disciplinary treatment team that provides care to the veteran, and documents plans of care in the veteran's Treatment Plan. The incumbent is knowledgeable of community resources. The primary social worker initiates and completes discharge planning. MHICM Social Worker: The incumbent functions as part of an interdisciplinary Mental Health Intensive Case Management team, which includes a nurse case manager and Psychiatrist to provide intensive case management to veteran with serious mental illness. The incumbent completes assessments and documents in the veteran's treatment plan. The incumbent does weekly home visits to ensure veteran is at maximum functioning in their home environment. The incumbent makes referrals to providers as needed to include necessity for Inpatient Psychiatric Admissions. Housing Specialist: The incumbent is assigned to HUD-VASH as a Housing Specialist within the Mental Health Service working with Veterans who have substance abuse and mental Illness. The incumbent is a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides intense case management. The Housing Specialist is instrumental as the first point of contact to assist with the admission process and housing requirements necessary to get the Veteran housed quickly and effectively. Housing Specialist work collaboratively with Public Housing Authorities and Landlords to provide a smooth transition into housing. Housing Specialist are involved in community work/outreach as well as provide intake evaluations for diagnosis, treatment planning, counseling and group therapy. BHIP Case Manager: The BHIP Case Manager is assigned to our outpatient mental health team (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program--BHIP), and provides case management/care coordinator for Veterans receiving mental health care through in the BHIP Clinic. Homeless Case Manager - substance use focus: The case manager for Supported Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) will work with SSVF grantees and homeless program staff to engage Veterans experiencing substance use disorder concerns into VA services.
