FUNCTIONS:   The Occupational Therapist is responsible for providing services that help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent or limit permanent physical disability of patients suffering from injuries or disease; restores, maintains and promotes overall fitness and health.  Is responsible for the evaluation, planning, directing and administering of occupational therapy modalities as directed by the prescribing licensed physician.  Administers treatment and occupational modalities as directed by the physician in an effort to restore function and prevent disability following injury, disease or physical disability.  Assist patient to reach their maximum performance and level of functioning, while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Maintain compliance with local, state and federal laws:
2. Maintain adequate supplies and equipment to complete work assignments;
3. Examine patients’ medical histories;
4. Test and measure patients’ strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration and motor function;
5. Determine patients’ ability to be independent and reintegrate into the community or workplace after injury or illness;
6. Develop plans describing a treatment strategy, its purpose and its anticipated outcome;
7. Determine exercises to improve mobility, flexibility, strength and/or endurance;
8. Use electrical stimulation, hot or cold compresses and ultrasound to relieve pain and reduce swelling;
9. Teach patients to use assistive and adaptive devices such as prostheses and wheelchairs;
10. Show patients exercises to perform at home to expedite recovery;
11. Document the patients’ progress, conduct periodic examinations and modify treatments, as necessary;
12. Consult and practice with a variety of other professionals, such as physicians, dentists, nurses, educators, social workers, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists;
13. Coordinates, delegates and supervises responsibilities assigned to supportive staff (Occupational Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapy Aides, etc.)
14. Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluation department performance versus budget controls and takes appropriate action to remain within budget guidelines.
15. Ensures that patient charges are accurate and entered on a timely basis.
16. Participated in infection control, departmental equipment training and organizational safety and fire safety programs.

Current license as an Occupational Therapist.
